Conwy Castle

It can be difficult to decide what to do on the way home from a holiday. It had been a pretty good holiday, and we had seen a lot and done a lot. Conwy Castle was on the way home, and looked like it might be interesting. Decision made!

The A55 runs along the North coast of Wales from Holyhead to Chester. On its way, it passes right beside Conwy, and it is a 5 minute diversion to find the town centre. We parked the car in the Morfa Bach Car Park and walked up into the walled part of town.

Up in the town we found a car park full of Morris 1000 cars. (Minors, Travellers and more exotic variants) They all seemed in great shape, especially considering their age, and the owners were on hand and very enthusiastic about answering any questions. In the town centre a street performer was playing his trade and giving an enthusiastic show as a statue in a group of 3 others. It was all very interesting, but Dwayne had an urge to move on and see more. So off we went. Being mapless and hard of thinking, we took a while to realise we were actually walking in the opposite direction to the castle. (I say we, when in fact it was Dilyn, who noticed. I was quite cheerfully walking along and might have reached the M56 before I realised.)

The castle is in pretty good shape, considering it was finished in 1287 after only years work. There’s a lot more information on the Cadw website, which is linked below. The castle is a Cadw site, and has links with English Heritage, so if you are a member of either you can get some special discounts.

We limited our tour of the castle, in particular we didn’t climb up many of the towers, mainly because Dwayne wants to run everywhere and up stone spiral steps he scares the bejeebers out of us. (Seriously, he is bonkers. You’d have to see it.) And down we went, through the town, down the steps and back to the car park. We were peckish. Luckily, there is the Morfa Bach Cafe in the car park. We ordered burgers and soft drinks. They took a little while to come. (There were murmurs.)

It was well worth the wait. The burgers were delicious and were demolished quite quickly. The fries were tasty and the soft drinks were chilled and, well, soft drinks. I’d suggest trying the food there because it was lovely.

Back in the car, and away we went, along the A55 on the way to the M56 and beyond. The end of a glorious holiday. Thank you Wales!
